World Cancer Day Message

By: Patrick Martin MD, Press Release

In Commemoration of World Cancer Day, February 4th, 2014

    Message

    Theme:  Debunk the Myths

Cancer is not a death sentence.  Cancer is avoidable and preventable; and treatable and curable, if caught early.

Food and exercise are “medicine” to prevent and combat cancer (as well as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and mental illness).

The following lifestyle principles will Maximize Good Health, Minimize Illness, and Reduce Medical Bills:

    1.       All energy comes from the sun.  Solar energy is trapped by the leaves of plants and converted to food energy (photosynthesis).  Therefore, ground provisions, legumes (beans, peas, and lentils), and whole grains should be the primary staples (energy foods) of the diet.  Rice and noodles are also energy foods but they are processed.

    2.       All vitamins and minerals (e.g. iron and calcium) come from the soil.  As plants grow, they extract vitamins and minerals from the soil and deposit them in their flowers, leaves, branches, stems and roots.  Therefore, fruits, leafy vegetables (lettuce, cabbage, etc), nuts and seeds, and provisions should be the primary source of all vitamins and minerals.  Other sources include fresh fish and fresh meats.  Note:  When the skin is exposed to sunlight, an adequate amount of vitamin D is produced in the body.  Use commercial multivitamins and mineral supplements (aka tonics) only when directed by your physician.

    3.       Vitamins Fight Cancer.  Anti-oxidant vitamins A, C and E help the immune system destroy abnormal cells such as cancer cells.  These vitamins are found in the colors of fruits and vegetables.  Sorrel is purplish-red; guava is pinkish-red; watermelon and tomatoes are red; carrots and papaya are orange; sweet peppers are green, red or yellow; pak choi, lettuce and cabbage are green; papaya and guava are reddish–pink.  Vitamins are also obtained from ground provisions.

    4.       Fiber comes from plants.  Plant food provides adequate amounts of fiber which aids digestion, eases the passage of stool and prevents cancer.  Therefore, eat plant food every meal of every day.

    5.       Fat is essential but in small quantities.  Limit the use of saturated fats (e.g. cheese, pizza, red meats, bacon, and dairy products).  Eliminate the use of trans fats (read labels of all processed food e.g. margarine, meats, fries, nuggets, pizza, drink mixes, popcorn, desserts, etc).

    6.       Eat in Moderation.  Consuming “a pile of food”  leads to bloating with gas, indigestion, heartburn, and forcing to pass “a pile of hard stool” which increases the risk of hemorrhoids.

    7.       Water is the best drink.  Start each meal with a glass of water to aid digestion.  Coconut water is an excellent source of energy and potassium.

    8.       Do not consume anything with high fructose corn syrup (HFCS).  HFCS is sweeter and cheaper than regular sugar.  Excess sweetener intake is linked to excess body weight, diabetes and cancer.  HFCS is an ingredient of almost every processed food and sugary drink.  20oz soda contains 15 teaspoons of sugar in the form of HFCS.  5% juice drink is not real juice; they are mostly artificially flavored, sugar water (swank).    If HCFS is on the label, the product is highly processed or artificial.

    9.       Avoid of limit Alcohol.  Alcohol increases the risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, stomach and colon.  Therefore, avoid or limit alcohol to no more than 2 drinks per day.  1 drink equals 10oz beer, 3oz wine, and 1oz shot of rum.

    10.    Move:  Engage in exercise equal to 30 - 40 minutes of brisk walking 3 times per week.

    Diet Tip

The Best Diet is Breakfast, Lunch, and Supper.  Consume three (3) meals per day spaced 4 to 6 hours apart with the last meal two (2) hours before bed time.  Do not skip breakfast.

    Cooking Tip

Baking and steaming are much healthier than frying and boiling.  They also lower cooking gas bills.

    Money Saving Tip

Food is medicine.  Eat what you grow; grow what you eat.

    Alerts

    •         Rare (under-cooked) meat and blackened (burnt) meat are linked to cancer of the colon.

    •         Ketchup, BBQ sauce, Cheese Sauce, Vienna Sausage, and Ramen Noodles are high in salt which can increase blood pressure.  Also, they may contain MSG which can trigger migraine headaches and also add more sodium (salt) to the diet.

    •         Evaporated milk is concentrated.  Before using, it must be diluted with an equal amount of water.  If not, there will be stomach bleeding and loss of iron (anemia or low blood).  Anemic children have lower academic and sports performance.

    •         Never give evaporated milk and custard to infants.

    •         Adding condensed milk to popcorn and corn curls gives an overdose of sugar and salt leading to tooth decay and an increased risk of high blood pressure.

    •         Rotting teeth (aka dental caries) is the # 1 infection in primary school children.
    Debunking Common Myths

    •         Milk is the only source of calcium - False.  Plants and fish are better sources.

    •         People have to drink something hot in the morning - False.  Inside the body is 98 degrees F.

    •         Carambola (five fingers) causes cancer - False; it has cancer-fighting vitamins.

    •         Constipation is caused by lack of water – False.  Major causes include milk, junk food, and gluttony.

    •         “My chile is fat and nice” - False.  Fattening-up children is child abuse because excess fat (aka obesity) is associated with diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
