Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 04, 2014 (SKNIS): Prime Minister the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas and Premier Honourable Vance Amory have both assured that the fire which destroyed the building that housed the Nevis Island Administration’s (NIA) Treasury, Inland Revenue and Value Added Tax (VAT) departments is being investigated.
In referring to the January 17, 2014 fire, on his Ask the PM - ZIZ Radio programme, Prime Minister Douglas noted that investigations are well underway.
Similarly, Premier Amory encouraged the general public to await the findings of the St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force.
“I just want to say to the people of Nevis and the people generally that they should see this as something which the police are handling and the Fire Services,” Premier Amory noted. “They will do their investigation and they will then advise us as to what are their findings.”
Commissioner of Police Celvin G. Walwyn informed the St. Kitts and Nevis Information Service on January 31, 2014, that initial investigations have revealed certain findings.
“The fire in Nevis is actively under investigation,” Commissioner Walwyn confirmed. “We have sought arson investigation experience from the RIMS which is the Regional Investigative Management System located in Trinidad under IMPACS [Implementation Agency for Crime and Security].
They will be sending someone here to access the fire, access the damage and to make a determination. Preliminary investigations have led us to believe that it could be one thing, but we don’t want to make that comment. We want the experts to come in and tell us 100 percent – this is what it was.”
