Newtown floored by familiar faces

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - HARRIS PAINT St. Peters have upset the former champions, Winners Circle Newtown United 1-0, thanks to a goal from a former Newtown hero.

The thrilling fame was played last evening (Feb. 11) at Warner Park and is part of the St. Kitts-Nevis Football Association Premier Division League.

St. Peters’ coach Anthony ‘Nets’ Isaac and striker Imron Ponteen were once part of the Newtown team that saw success in winning multiple championships. were now looking to add an obstacle to Newtown’s top four push.

Both teams appeared to be a threat to each other, executing what seemed to be an offensive game plan but their failure at taking advantage of their opportunities was painfully obvious.

From the penalty spot, Kareem Harris had the best opportunity of the first half to put St. Peters ahead but his powerful attempt was thwarted by Newtown’s veteran goalkeeper Akil Byron.

In the second half, Newtown looked to turn up the heat in the game while St. Peter’s seemed content to absorb the pressure and strike on the counter-attack. The strategy was however unsuccessful for both sides.

As the final whistle drew near and a goalless-draw seemed inevitable, a counter-attacking move left Imron Ponteen open on the right wing and he sped away ahead of the Newtown defenders and was left with just Byron to beat.

Ponteen then cheekily beat an on-rushing Byron to give his team the shock lead over the deflated Newtown team in the 83rd minute.

Ponteen ran over to the Newtown bench and aimed his celebration at his former colleagues which caused a stir amongst the Newtown players and supporters.

In the 90th minute however, Ponteen and some of his former colleagues got into a spat which saw Kimron Browne of Newtown being red-carded.

Following the game Browne returned to the field - and with the help of some of his teammates - attacked Ponteen and had to be separated by their respective coaches.
