Location under consideration for vendors

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St Kitts – SEVERAL locations are currently being looked into as possible alternatives for relocation of vendors plying their trade around the Independence Square.

According to head of the Traffic Department - Inspector Carl Caines - two streets have been earmarked as possible alternatives to have them placed.

Speaking exclusively with SKNVibes Business, Caines explained that it is taking the Department so long to come up with an alternative is because “it may require a street or two” but what they are looking to have implemented is “an area for vending ...”.

“What is being proposed by the department, it may require a whole street or two streets but the way moving forward is to have an area allocated for vending so we know that area and we will move all of those vendors from the Square Street, those trailor carts, those persons with food stalls, they would be removed.”

He explained that they looked into several streets as being vending locations in the downtown Basseterre area but currently they are awaiting the approvals as logistical work has to be undertaken.

“Several areas were looked at, but it is to have it approved by the license and physical planning personnel. It’s a partnering work as we work together… But we have looked at two streets to put those vendors.”

Inspector Caines further explained that Princes’ Street and Bank Street are the possibilities with the latter being the wider.

“Two streets that we are looking at (are): Bank Street...(which) is the street where we have meetings and lots of activities and we believe that Bank Street is well suited and (secondly) the possibility of Princess Street… Bank Street has been looked at for sure as it is a wide street. It can accommodate more business than the other street in Basseterre.”

In September of last year some vendors plying their trade around the Independence Square were issued with notices that they are to be removed from the area.

Popular Ice Cream vendor I-Queen is one such vendor who was issued with the notice that she would be removed from the Independence Square.
