Vehicle plummets into Old Road Bay

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WHAT probably was meant to be a simply early-morning commute, transitioned into a situation which found two individuals in a wrecked vehicle floating in Old Road Bay, with one of the vehicle’s occupants needing extrication.

Commander of District ‘B’, Superintendent Cromwell Henry explained to SKNVibes that the incident transpired today (Feb. 15) sometime after 3:00 a.m. And according to investigations, motor jeep PA3345 - which was being driven by Kevin Somersal of Sandy Point - was travelling from Basseterre to Sandy Point at the time of the incident.

He explained that while the vehicle was travelling along the Old Road Bay road, the driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle, which plummeted into the sea.

SKNVibes understands that Somersal was able to exit the vehicle with relative ease but the lone passenger - Melissa Williams of Sandy Point - had to be extricated therefrom.

The District ‘B’ Commander explained that in addition to the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire and Rescue Services Department and a mechanic from the Challengers area, community individuals and passersby assisted in extricating the young lady from the wreckage and getting her safely to the road where both were transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital.

They reportedly sustained deep lacerations and bruises to their faces and were detained at the hospital for additional treatment and observation.

The communal extrication process took an approximate hour, SKNVibes has been informed.

Superintendent Henry issued a word of caution to motorists to be aware of the difference between daytime driving conditions and nighttime driving conditions.

“Driving at nights always poses difficulty because some of the conditions which are present during the daytime are not present during the nighttime. For example, a driver’s seeing distance is shortened and seeing capacity is lessened during the nighttime. And therefore, the risk of accident would be increased. It is therefore advisable that extra caution be taken when driving at night including reducing your speed.”
