BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - IN 2011 St. Kitts and Nevis became the smallest nation to have won a medal at the IAAF World Championships after the male quartet captured bronze at the meet.

Since then high expectations have been placed on relay teams representing the Federation to emulate the success of 2011.

In an interview with SKNVibes Sports, Public Realtions Officer of the St. Kitts-Nevis Amateur Athletic Association (SKNAAA) Evris Huggins stated that prospects for a number of relay teams representing the Federation are very high.

“What are the chances of relay teams? The likelihood is very high based on the performances we are seeing from the junior athletes right now. I can see us fielding relay teams at the CARIFTA Games based on the performances we are seeing this year.

He added that the potential shown by athletes in the indoor campaign has shown improvements in both male and female categories.

“Based on the promise we are seeing from the indoor campaign we are seeing consistency and improvement amongst our male athletes. We are seeing a huge improvement amongst the females. We have Rosalie Pringle in school; she jus started her indoor campaign winning her very first race. She is now ranked fifth in her conference and she is going to be doing some more indoor competitions.

“Marcia Pemberton opened her season in 7.37 seconds after being back from a surgery as well as lingering injury. She is showing some great promise. Maritzer Williams has started competing again and she is trying to get back in shape.”

Huggins added that the Coaching Committee should take a closer look at fielding relay teams throughout the year.

“The potential of fielding relay teams will be very high and I think that the Coaching Committee would have to look at it more on a micro level.”
