Basseterre, St. Kitts, February 20, 2014 (SKNIS): “Promoting Learning through Healthy Competition,” a befitting theme for this year’s Learning Support Department’s Reading Contest which saw six students vying for the title of Best Reader.
Students from the Basseterre High, Cayon High, Charles E. Mills Secondary, Verchilds High, Saddlers Secondary and Washington Archibald High Schools came out in their numbers to support their respective schools on February 19 at the Verchilds High School.
The students were judged on accuracy, effectiveness in reading, correct interpretation of punctuation, distinct pronunciation of words, emphasis of key words, effective conveyance of the mood and feeling of the passage, effective use of volume, the appropriate rate of reading as well as level of confidence and ability to recover if a mistake was made.
Verchilds High School won bragging rights after Amira Lucas won the competition. Confident, poised and articulate were some of the words used by the judges to describe the young lady.
In second place was Vinette Richardson of Charles E. Mills Secondary and third was Romencia Noland of Saddlers Secondary.
The Learning Support Department, within the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU), aims at motivating students in forms 1 to 3 who are a part of its Academic and Social Programmes.
The biannual events to support the programme, alternate between the academic and social aspects. This year focuses on academic.
Upcoming academic activities include a Math Quiz on February 25 and a Choral Speaking and Spelling Competition on February 26.
