SKN bids to host CPL Finals

By: Loshaun Dixon, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - Minister of Sports the Hon. Glen Phillip has disclosed that his Ministry has made a bid to the organizers of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in an attempt to take advantage of the new lighting facility at Warner Park.

In a Cabinet press conference held on Wednesday (Feb. 20) Minister Phillip, highlighted the reason for the new lighting facility at Warner Park.

“The government of St. Kitts and Nevis have invested in a lighting facility at Warner Park, state-of-the-art lighting facility, the best in the region as was mentioned by the president of the WICB.

“What we have done, we have positioned ourselves to not only host international matches but what we have done is that we are trying our best to start after-school programmes for our kids. It is a holistic development.”

Phillip announced the bid stating that they are seeking to lure a number of CPL games to the Federation including the Finals and Semi-Finals.

“Last night we have had active discussions with the CPL and we have bid for a number of games including, the Semi-Finals and the Finals of the CPL matches to be hosted here in St. Kitts.”

He added that he is confident that the bid would be successful citing the second-to-none facility at Warner Park.

“It is just a matter of the CPL to announce whether we have won the bid or not. However we are extremely confident in the fact that our facility is second-to-none and we are proud of what we have done.”

Last month in an exclusive with SKNVibes CPL’s Chief Operating Officer Pete Russell said that Warner Park Cricket Stadium in St. Kitts is in the frame to be considered as the host venue for the Semi-Finals and Finals of the second edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) in 2014.

Russell told SKNVibes Sports that the Federation is almost certain to host games in the 2014 tournament.

“It is down to the government. In terms of the options available, it is really down to the appetite of the people on the island. We are very happy with the facilities here, so there is no question games can be played in St. Kitts. But, obviously, we have a number of stakeholders, so it is a case of trying to fit it in the schedule.”
