Dr the Hon Timothy Harris wants European Union (EU) to do an audit of St Kitts post adaptation money

Former Sugar Workers at Factory Social Center 2004
By: Team UNITY, Press Release

Team UNITY Government to pay sugar workers $16 millio

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, February 23rd, 2014  --  Ex Sugar workers and their families have not benefited well from the millions of dollars given to the government to help with the empowerment of the ex sugar workers and their re-orientation for work.

Dr Harris said, “Look at the former sugar workers who are suffering and have been pushed into economic hardships caused by 17 percent VAT, 85 percent increase in electricity, high cost of living and the failure of the government to develop commercial orchards and commercial vegetable farms etc, it is clear the monies have not impacted the principal beneficiaries.

We have too an SIDF that has not done much for the sugar workers.”  When the sugar industry closed under the watch of Cedric Liburd, then Minister of Agriculture, the Douglas regime promised that millions of dollars from the European Union were to go to create self-employment opportunities.  This never happened.  The efficacious outcomes desired from the EU funds never occurred.

“Somebody must give us proper accounting.  I will call upon the European Union to do so, said Unity Leader at a massive public meeting in Saddlers”.

Meantime Team Unity has committed to pay ex sugar workers the $16 million short paid to them.
