What Nevis residents say about ‘issues affecting them’

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – FOR many years, there have been ongoing issues between St. Kitts and Nevis as it relates to a number of concerns including politics and equitable  distribution of resources. But what are the views of Nevisians on the relationship between the sister isles?

In this special our edition of ‘What Nevis residents Say’, SKNVibes spoke to more than 20 individuals and gathered their thoughts on the abovementioned issue. Below are some of the responses and the interviewees.

Question: How long have you been living in Nevis and what are some of the issues that affect you here? What can be done to solve these issues?

The top six responses were as follows:

Businessman: “I have been living here all my life and to be honest the thing that is affecting me is how slowly the island the developing. There isn’t much for young people to do and we can’t blame them because they trying. I think what needs to be done is open the island to more investors so we can develop just like St. Kitts.”

Teacher: “I was originally from St. Kitts but I moved here about 20 years ago. To me to in order to fix the confusion that is going on we first need sit down and iron out our differences or else we will remain divided.”

Taxi Driver: “What we have is a set of politicians who just fighting for power. I am living here for the past 30 years, and to be honest I see Nevis dying everyday and we need to do something before it gets worst. What I think needs to be done is give us the opportunity to build this place back up to what it was rather than we fight and bring it down.”

Fisherman: “Nevis to me is developing but at a slow pace. I came from Anguilla about 15 years ago and I have seen politicians fight to bring Nevis back to what it was. I remembered when they asked for our own independence and their government said no. I think it’s time for the selfish thinking to stop and allow this place to be what it was.”

Entrepreneur: “I was born a Nevisian but I went away to study and I returned to start a business here, and to be honest what Nevis was then is not what it is now. This whole fight with St. Kitts and us needs to stop. They say we united but to the world we divided.”

“Many of our youths are finding other means of making money whether it be here on our shores or elsewhere, and we even opened our shores to others so that we can work together so why can’t we do the same?”

Hair Stylist: “Since I was in St. Kitts, I have grown up hearing Nevis and St. Kitts at each other for political power and independence. But what we need to ask ourselves is if we get either the power to make our own decisions or independence will it solve our issues here?”
