Basseterre, St. Kitts – 26 February, 2014 -- On Tuesday 25th February, at the request of the Teachers employed at the Basseterre High School, the executive body of the St. Kitts Teachers’ Union met with the educators who evidently are still annoyed by the lack of word from the Ministry of Education as it relates to the health issues that have resurfaced in the teaching-learning environment of the institution.
The alarming reports of ailments which these educators are experiencing during the work environment of the Basseterre High School and the lack of concerned express by those in authority in ensuring there is occupational safety for those employed in this institution of learning is a clear violation of the International Labour Laws. The reports of illness include but are not limited to vertigo, persistent headaches, itching, facial and upper torso rashes, bronchial infections, chest pains, continuous coughing.
The SKTU in conjunction with the teaching fraternity of the Basseterre High School is once again calling on the relevant authorities in the Ministry of Health; Ministry of Education and those in the Labour Department to meet with the representatives of the staff of BHS in an effort to resolve these troubling issues. President of the St Kitts Teachers’ Union will an address to the nation in response to these troubling issues. The Union calls on all stakeholders to support of our teachers and students in this struggle.
