Blue dominates SSS sports day, Red declared overall winner

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SPORTS DAY at the Saddlers Secondary School (SSS) showed a great deal of promise for the institution’s athletes as they prepare ahead of the upcoming TDC Interschool Championship where they will be aiming to build on their 2013 performance.

The athletes came out on yesterday (Feb. 27) at the Saddlers Playfield and gave the public a fine display of track and field prowess.

The event commenced with a march past, led by the the Cayon Seven Day Adventist Church Path Finders Marching Band, with each house displaying their own unique march.

The day was dominated by athletes of Blue and Red House, who were seemingly trading blows as they reached for supremacy.

It would appear that Red House would be dethroned only by a miraculous turnaround, especially since they had such a commanding lead over the competition following the Heats and pre-sports activities.

On Sports Day however, Blue House was able to come out triumphant only by a mere four points over Red House. Notwithstanding, Red House was declared the overall champion.

With the school being only five years old, this was the first opportunity for the athletes to participate in a senior category which was dominated by Evanceroy Barnes who is popularly known for his football ability. He set the first records in the senior boys category in the 200m, 400m and 100m, having been unmatched in those races.

Trevor Hanley of Red House was among the record breakers in the 400m Class Two Boys category winning in a time of 56:73. Amy Clarke won the 100m Class Two Females category in a time of 13: 15 seconds.

Akimbah Francis won the senior boys 800m, Donella Eddy won the girls 1200m and Zakimba Richards won the boys 1500m. These were all record breakers.

The evening however ended in drama during the 4x400m when on the anchor leg, Blue House seemed to be running away with the race and started celebrating before crossing the finish line. He seemed to have been clipped at the line by the Red House athlete who gained a significant amount of ground nearing the end of the race.

In the end, the race was disqualified as the judges could not identify a winner because of the darkness and the convergence of the crowd on the track.

During the 2013 TDC Interschool Championship, SSS copped 11 medals and it appears they would be seeking to increase their take during this year’s competition.
