BASSETERRE, St.Kitts- WITH an overall total of 195 points, Blue House emerged the back-to -back winner of the annual Miss Beverly Harris Spelling Bee Competition held on Wednesday (Feb. 26) at the Deane-Glasford Primary School in John England Village, St. Peter’s Parish.

In second position was Red House with 142 points followed by Green House which amassed 101 points.

Notably, the school, this year, only has three colour houses instead of its traditional four. And the change is no more Gold House.

As gathered, when a particular colour house has too few a members, they are consequently placed in the other Houses.

The Spelling Bee Competition was held in four different age categories - Under Seven, Under Nine, Under 11 and Under 13.  And two competitors were on team throughout the scholastic contest.

In the Seen Round, and with 30 seconds on the clock, contestants were given words for which they had to practice in advance. However, in the Unseen Rounds, the ‘spelling bees’ were given words they were expected to know at their respective grade levels.

Some of the words in the Under Seven category were: Come, She, Play and Jam and for the Under Nine: Phrase, Square and Twelve.

Aeroplane, Measurement, Vibration and Disciple were some of the words asked to spell in the Under 11 while the Under 13 participants got words such as Conscience, Filament, Massacre and Symmetry.

Blue House won all categories except the Under Nine segment which was copped by Red House.

The champion spellers in each category saw: Under Seven – Gabriel Jackson (Blue House), Under Nine – Aydiel Tuckett (Red House), Under 11 – Princess Simon (Blue House) and Under 13 – Jendari Mills (Blue House).

Princess Simon was adjudged the overall Best Speller. She won the Under Nine category in 2013.

Simon along with Jendari Mills, who took part in 2013 as well, are former Gold House members.

Teacher and competition judge Shelana Barzey gave her impression on the spelling bee contest.

“The competition was very competitive and of a high standard. For contests of this nature, as educators, we are only helping to improve the students’ spelling accuracy and adding to their vocabulary which is very important.”

Principal Avonelle Martin informed that this is the second year that the inter-house spelling competition has featured participants from the junior grades; a change from traditionally only having the older students from Grades Five and Six.

This reporter wishes to congratulate her niece Jendari ‘Cookie’ Mills and all of the other winners on a job well done and to all of the other participants.

The points gained by each House from the Spelling Bee were added to those scored at the Athletics Heats, which will be merged with the points each House gains at the schools’ Sports Day scheduled to take place at the St. Peter’s Playfield, starting at 1:00 p.m. on Friday (Feb.28).

After those points were announced Green House was adjudged the overall winner followed Blue House leaving Red House behind.
