Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 13, 2014 (SKNIS): The Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has delivered yet again on its promise to upgrade the security infrastructure in order to enhance public safety.

On Wednesday (March 12) the new home of the police and fire and rescue services in Tabernacle was opened with a ceremony that saw the community celebrating with the security agencies, senior government officials and representatives of the Mexican government.

The two-storey building has a floor size of 8,596 square feet and features a double garage and storage room, offices, interview and communication rooms as well as holding cells. Upstairs features barracks for males and females, laundry room, lounge, a kitchen and more offices.

Commissioner of Police Celvin G. Walwyn thanked the residents for their support to the men and women that serve the Harris’ to Lodge communities.

“We’ve been doing a great job and we plan on continuing that great job but it’s better when you have tools to do it with …,” he stated.

“This [building] is going to help us here in the Federation to continue the 41 percent drop in crime we had in January, the 36.9 percent drop we had last month (February), the 40 percent drop in crime we had in December and the overall 15.9 percent drop for 2013.”

The multiagency facility was constructed by contractor Keith James at a cost of just over $3 million. It was jointly funded by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis and the Government of Mexico.

Ambassador of the Republic of Mexico to St. Kitts and Nevis His Excellency Luis Manuel Lopez Moreno said it was a priority for the Government headed by President Enrique Pena Nieto “to have a Mexican nation which works as a responsible global partner.”

“In that way, Mexico wants to strengthen its international presence and enhance in particular, its international cooperation for the development of the Caribbean countries,” Ambassador Moreno stated, revealing future engagements in the areas of terrorism, disaster mitigation and tourism.

Mexico also assisted in funding the Dieppe Bay Police Station which opened in 2011. The ambassador pledged additional assistance to St. Kitts and Nevis as it seeks to strengthen the relationship with the twin-island federation.
