BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 19TH 2009 (CUOPM) - St. Paulian Iris Elliott continued to celebrate her 103rd birthday with a visit Thursday from her Parliamentary Representative and Prime Minister, Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas.
Prime Minister Douglas spent half an hour with the Federation’s centenarian, who reminissed on ‘the good old days.’
He extended congratulations to her on behalf of the Government and the People of St. Kitts and Nevis on reaching this significant milestone.
“I join all others in giving God thanks for a long, very productive and fruitful life,” said Dr. Douglas, adding: "We are proud of you and of the significant contribution that you have made in the sugar industry.”
He gave the assurance that his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Administration will continue to ensure that the elderly citizens, will continue to get the assistance through the visits of the home care officers, “who ensure that they are properly looked after and that their conditions are conducive to continued good living.”
Born on February 16th 1906, the former Iris Foreman, has six children – five daughters and a son, who is deceased. She lives in her own home on the same spot where she was born. Mrs. Elliott is cared for by a daughter Laura Brown, who lives next door. Her other children live in Miami and England.
Although she needs some assistance to move around, Mrs. Elliott has a strong voice and good sight.
In 2004, she had the honour of cutting the ribbon at the official opening of the new St. Paul’s Community Center.
