Plans for Annual Easter Monday Aquatic Sports underway

By: Jenise Ferlance-Isaac, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - PLANS are underway for the 56th Annual Basil Henderson Easter Monday Aquatic Sports Meet, which will be hosted by the ‘Cultural Doctor’, Winston 'Zack' Nisbett, in collaboration with the St. Kitts 4H Youth Organisation.

The Sports Meet will be held at the Ferry Terminal on Monday, April 21 starting at 9:00 a.m. and is expecting to pull a huge crowd.

This annual event commemorates the life of Henderson who, according to the organisers, was a "venerable patriarch who gave his whole being to the 4-H Organisation, which he started and nurtured in St. Kitts and Nevis".

The Meet will see a brief opening ceremony with speeches by former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports Lloyd Lazaar and a representative from the event's main sponsor - Courts.

The usual events of the Meet, including Swimming Races, Ham Pole, Iron Pole and Boat Racing are slated to take place on Easter Monday and prizes will be awarded to winners.

The organisers have however added a new event in the form of Beach Volleyball, where all will be welcomed to participate.

Other sponsors include the Scenic Railway, RAM’S Supermarket and John Richard.

Expected entertainment for the Aquatic Sports Meet will include Cultural Ambassadors and well-established calypsonians.

As one of the longest holiday events in the twin-island Federation, this year Nisbett will be publishing a book dedicated to the event – ‘55 years of Aquatic Sports in St. Kitts’.

The book, he said, would be published later in the year with some of the proceeds being put towards a Scholarship Programme.

He declared that the Scholarship would sponsor two underprivileged children attending the Newtown and Irish Town Primary Schools.

All are invited to go out and witness and/or participate in this looked forward to Aquatic Sports Meet.
