April 6th April 2014 - The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (EOM/OAS), headed by former Mexican presidential candidate Josefina Vázquez Mota, congratulates Costa Ricans who went to the polls to exercise their right to vote. With this second round, the process to elect the President and Vice President of the Republic of Costa Rica for the next four years comes to its conclusion.
The EOM/OAS highlights the efforts made by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and the presidential candidates to encourage the exercise of suffrage. It is noteworthy that this effort was joined by some of the presidential candidates who did not reach the second round, which corroborates the democratic maturity of the Costa Rican people.
The Mission congratulates the Tribunal for the successful organization and management of the electoral process that for the second time since the founding of the Second Republic in 1949 included a presidential runoff. In particular, the Mission highlights the ability to respond to unpredictable situations like irregular theft of some ballots during the campaign. In this regard, the Tribunal applied appropriate security measures to safeguard the integrity of the voting.
The Mission appreciates the invitation made by the Government of Costa Rica and the help provided to carry out the monitoring activities in the different phases of this election. The Mission also welcomes the immediate implementation of some of the recommendations included in the preliminary report of the EOM/OAS, published after the first round of the elections on February 2.
On Monday, April 7, in a press conference, the head of delegation of the OAS, Josefina Vázquez Mota, will make a presentation on the observations of the Mission. Subsequently, the EOM/OAS will submit its findings and recommendations to the Permanent Council of the Organization in Washington, DC.
