Primary Schools Quiz Prize-Giving Ceremony

Press Release

BASSETERRE St. Kitts, April 8th, 2014  --  The curtains came down on the annual History and Heritage Month of Activities 2014 with the Prize-giving Ceremony for the Primary Schools Quiz which took place on Thursday 3 April on the grounds of Matheson House, headquarters of the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society.

Some 20 primary schools in St. Kitts participated this year (the seventh), in the annual quiz based on the social studies syllabus. It was held in three stages. At the Final, for the first time, two schools, George Moody Stuart and Seventh-Day Adventist, were tied at the end of the final round and had to go into overtime. The former prevailed, winning the championship for the second year in a row, also the first time this has happened.

In addition to the schools which had advanced to the semifinal and final stages, several children received cash prizes and trophies for scoring full points at one or more of the various stages. The championship shield was presented by Ms Clarice Cotton, Chief Education Officer, who also addressed the gathering of students, teachers, parents, committee members and others. In his address, Sir Probyn Inniss, Chair of the History and Heritage Committee, thanked the sponsors of the Quiz, Royal Bank (RBTT), as well as Ms Idella Pemberton who contributed refreshments; also other contributors to the Month of Activities which include: Modern Printers, Caribelle Batik/Romney Manor, Kittitian Hill, Kantours, S.L. Horsoford & Co, TDC, various governmental and non-governmental agencies, and numerous volunteers.

The History and Heritage Month of Activities, an initiative of the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society, seeks to promote greater awareness, understanding and appreciation among citizens of the history, environment and culture of St. Kitts and Nevis through the hosting of various activities in the two islands for four weeks or so during February-March each year.
