April 8th, 2014 -- In response to issues raised by members of the public that they had been harassed by political telephone calls and texts late at night, and that these individuals’ contact details had been obtained without their permission, the UPP would like to clarify its own position regarding telephone and electronic communications.
The UPP is operating a professional phone bank at our Command Centre, which we use to contact potential supporters and interact with the public.
The UPP has a database of its supporters, which the party has been building up for several years. This database includes information obtained by telephone canvassing returns, and house-to-house canvassing activities conducted by our candidates and supporters.
The UPP categorically states that none of our cell phone data was obtained from the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) as this information is utterly proprietary to ABEC.
The UPP phone bank operates from 8 AM to 8 PM and is staffed by a professional group of people. The UPP respects people's right not to be unreasonably disturbed, and the phone bank does not place calls either early in the morning or after 8 PM.
If other parties are behaving in a less scrupulous manner, the UPP calls upon them to avoid disturbing people at unsociable hours and to respect people’s right to privacy.
