April 11th 2014 - Team Unity joins with the people of Trinidad and Tobago in mourning the death of one of its most renowned and illustrious public servants in the person of His Excellency Arthur Robinson, former President and Prime Minister of the twin island Republic.
The distinguished Caribbean statesman set a high standard of decorum, civility, integrity and service which all political leaders should try to emulate.
Arthur Robinson served the people of the twin island state passionately. He held the heart string of many especially in the island of his birth, Tobago. President Robinson had the distinction of being the only citizen of Trinidad and Tobago to hold its two highest public offices, those are the offices of Prime Minister (head of government) and the office President (Head of State).
In a long and successful political career, Robinson’s enduring legacy will include his stout defense of democracy in Trinidad and Tobago. Faced with a coupd'état in 1990, Robinson drew the line in the sand, commanding the troops to attack with full force. Robinson knew that democracy was worth fighting for and he was prepared to put his life on the line to defend democratic norms and principles.
Robinson is also credited with making an enduring contribution to good governance and justice globally, in his leadership role in founding the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC is a permanent international tribunal to prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
This Court has been able to bring justice to many people around the world whose families were brutalized, killed and oppressed by rogue leaders. Robinson had a passion for regional integration. It was his intervention at the Grand Anse CARICOM Summit that provided the catalyst for the serious work that led tothe Caribbean Single Market and Economy(CSME).
Our CARICOM region has lost a worthy statesman, a drum major for democracy and global justice.
