Protests will continue but maybe in different forms...says Harris

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE protest action taken by Team Unity against the delayed tabling of the Motion of No Confidence (MoNC) would continue, says Unity Leader the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris, but the possibility exists that it might take on different forms.

The last protest - where picketers were observed outside the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Bank, the place of employment of the Speaker of the House - took place on March 10, 2014. And Unity Leaders have indicated that the protests would not cease until the 16-month-old MoNC is tabled.

In a recent interview with this publication, Dr. Harris said the protest action has not stopped and explained that it “will take many forms and we did say that we will continue until the matter is resolved. The matter is not resolved, therefore, those protest actions will continue...

“We have never given an expectation that there would be a public event every day. Certainly, the protest continues and we say we will continue to fight on behalf of the people and we are prepared to fight until this matter is resolved...

“We have not had some activities for some period of time since around the middle of March, but it does not mean that those activities are discontinued. We certainly are going to continue those activities and other activities and everyday that the Motion is not heard. By and large, we continue our protest”.

Dr. Harris informed that Team Unity is currently in the process of meeting, discussing, gathering intelligence and seeking advice and support “from a variety of sources” on the way forward.

“I’m not at liberty to disclose the details of our involvement in this, but, as we have said, the protest continues...There are other initiatives that are being planned and at the appropriate time we will make public disclosure of those initiatives that it would be prudent to publicly advertise. And that is how the programme would go forward.

“What I could say publicly though, yes, we are still committed to the protesting of the subversion of democracy in St. Kitts and Nevis and indeed every citizen and every resident stake in preventing further deterioration in the constitutional order and in the democratic norms in our country.

“And we expect that at the appropriate time, when the signal is sent for public engagement, that we would have more people coming to give support and to stand in defence of their freedom.”
