Condor turns table on PM Douglas

The Hon. Sam T. Condor
By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - FORMER Deputy Prime Minister the Hon. Sam T. Condor has turned the tables on Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and called for his resignation; a song PM Douglas has been singing about him for the past several months.

For more than a year, Prime Minister Douglas and others have called for both Condor and Harris - who have been estranged from the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party which he leads - to resign from their parliamentary seats and seek a fresh mandate from the people.

Speaking at Team Unity’s most recent public political meeting on Friday (Apr. 11) at Bank Street, Condor said the one who needs to give up his parliamentary spot is the Prime Minister.

“It is not we (who are) supposed to resign...Douglas should resign. Douglas should resign not we. Not me and Tim. We are carrying out the people’s business. We have a mandate to protect the land of this country. The people gave me that mandate...He has no right to be doing that. It is he who should go to the people, not we. Not Tim and I, is he!

“We are following the principles and tradition of the Labour Party and the Labour Government. It is Douglas who needs to go back to the people and he should resign.”

Condor declared that he and Harris have been willing and able to seek a fresh mandate from the people, but suggested that that has not yet been done because of Dr. Douglas’ fear that he would lose.

He suggested that the tabling of the 16-month-old Motion of No Confidence would trigger elections, allowing the people to decide who they prefer to lead them.

“And we are not afraid to go back to the people. In fact, that is what we are asking Douglas to do (for) a long time. In fact, had he debated the Motion of No Confidence we would have (already) had an election and we would have (already) gone back to the people and the people would have already decided who they want...

“That is what it is about. If they want elections call the Motion of No Confidence or dissolve the House. We have said we are prepared to go back to the people, that is why we are standing in our constituency. That is why I am standing up in West Basseterre as the representative for the people in West Basseterre. And without a doubt...I will be returned in the next elections...”
