Threat to Democracy in St. Kitts and Nevis takes Centre Stage on Regional Panel

Dr Timothy Harris leads protest March in St Kitts-Jan 2014
By: Team UNITY, Press Release (TUCOM)

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, April 25th 2014 (TUCOM)  --  Citizens and residents of the Caribbean and beyond will on 27th April 2014 again be glued to their telecommunications technologies as they witness a regional panel debate the topical issue “Parliamentary Democracy Threatened” from the studio of CMC in Bridgetown, Barbados.

One subject certain to evoke response will be the subversion of democracy in St. Kitts and Nevis with particular focus on the delay in the tabling, debating and voting on the Motion of No Confidence some 16 months after its filing.

Since the historic picketing by Team Unity of the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in Buccament Bay, St Vincent, more persons in the region have condemned the illegitimate Douglas regime for making a mockery of our national assembly and constitutional democracy.

Dr the Hon Timothy Harris, Leader of Team Unity has accepted an invitation from Caribbean media to appear on the popular regional programme “Time to Face the Facts.”  The upcoming edition will deal with the parliamentary system in the region with focus on the situation in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Time to Face the Facts will be broadcast from the studio of CMC in Barbados this Sunday 27th April from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Time to Face the Facts is an interactive programme with viewers participating by telephone, email or social media. Our nationals will have amble opportunity to participate in this important debate at a time when our country’s democracy is being undermined by an illegitimate regime.

Commenting on the invitation Dr Harris said, “People certainly remain concerned and deeply troubled by the illegitimate government in Basseterre and the bad governance that is twinned with the illegitimate regime. The people of the Caribbean are concerned that the anomaly in our Federation can be replicated elsewhere if not challenged and checked.

They appreciate that they must respond to the Macedonian call for democracy beyond their own borders because the subversion of democracy anywhere in the region is a threat to democracy everywhere in the region.  Accordingly we cannot continue to live with the narrow and provincial ideas. CMC and all media associated with this programme ought to be congratulated for educating our Caribbean people about democracy and hence empowering us to fashion the kind democracy we deserve.”
