BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - A St. Kitts national was yesterday morning (Apr. 26) shot and killed by a police officer in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas.

According to www.virginislandsdailynews.com, the young man was shot "just outside the Carnival Village, which had officially opened only hours earlier".

The website stated that the police were not, at the time, releasing the name of the dead man or the police officer who did the shooting and St. Thomas-St. John Police Chief Darren Foy was reported as saying, ""We are conducting an internal investigation."

However, a source close to the young man's family gave the name as Clyde Norford of St. Paul's Village who was residing in St. Thomas.

The website stated that police had reported hearing shots fired about 12:15 a.m. yesterday in front of Fort Christian, yards away from the Carnival Children's Village, and minutes later reported a "man down".

It also stated that "dozens of people were within plain sight of the shooting when it occurred, few admitted to seeing anything" and "no one reported having heard any arguing prior to the shooting".

On June 3, 2007 Norford was charged with wounding with intent committed on May 28, 2007 at Cockle Shell Beach on the South East Peninsula.

He was also one of six men arrested and charged for the murder of Gregory Anthony Zakers, whose lifeless body was found in Black Rocks on April 12, 2008.

    He was however subsequently released.

Zakers murder trial is presently being held at the Basseterre High Court and SKNVibes understands that Norford was initially listed as a witness for the prosecution, but other measures were later taken.
