Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 25, 2014 (SKNIS): The St. Paul’s Daycare and Preschool Center was officially opened on Friday (April 25) and has already been dubbed by education officials as “a center of excellence” for the youth of St. Paul’s and its surrounding communities.
The state-of-the-art facility was built to the tune of EC $3.2 million and US $1 million which was contributed by the Republic of China (Taiwan) to ensure that the children in the community receive a high quality education.
Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas stated at the opening ceremony that the Government is paying special attention to the youth of the nation. He noted that ages one to five are known as the formative years and they are referred to as such because “the experiences of children during these early years have a lasting impact on who and what they become.”
“The love that we receive or fail to receive, the patience that is shown or not shown, the care in which we are dealt or not dealt as children have a lasting impact on our psyches and emotional state as all human beings and it is an attempt to ensure that the children of this country receive the best possible start in life that my Government set out so long ago to make sure that the daycare centers would be located all across this progressive nation,” the Prime Minister stated.
The Prime Minister added that the building of the Daycare Center in St. Paul’s was made possible by the generosity of one group of people “who stand out magnificently”, the Government and the people of the Republic of China on Taiwan.
His Excellency Miguel Li-Jey Tsao, Resident Ambassador of Republic of China (Taiwan), expressed that he was delighted to be at the opening to witness the beauty of the center. He also praised the Government for taking the initiative to invest in the country’s youth.
“Our children are one of the top investments any country can make for the betterment of itself,” he stated. “Education is the key, children are our future. Indeed, if we integrate this into the very young it will benefit the people in the country.”
Ionie Liburd-Willett, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education expressed the Ministry’s gratitude to Ambassador Tsao for his commitment to seeing the project through.
“Under the leadership of Ambassador Tsao, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has realized the benefits of many co-operation programmes in several areas of the federation’s development and especially in the area of education,” Mrs. Willett stated.
Some of the features of the center include a nursery and preschool area equipped with a laundry room and kitchen. Ramps have been installed for children with special needs. Bathrooms were designed for the children and each door is marked with an illuminated exit sign in the event of an emergency.
