Basseterre, St. Kitts, April 28, 2014 (SKNIS): The Ministry responsible for sports and youth empowerment in St. Kitts has fully embraced the concepts of expanded protection for student athletes through the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB)/UNICEF Child Protection Workshop.
Approximately 30 sports administrators attended the one-day session last Friday (April 25) which was described by a senior government official as advancing “the vision and mission of sustainable youth development and empowerment through sport.”
Director of Information Technology Christopher Herbert deputized at the opening ceremony for the Minister of Sports Honourable Glenn Phillip who was in St. Lucia at the 29th meeting of Council of Ministers for the Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL). Mr. Herbert said this type of programme - which equips the participants with child care protection skills - will help to guide the physical and emotional wellbeing of children as they grow into “top-rate athletes and citizens.”
“As protectors, give them hope. Give them understanding, give them skills,” he emphasized. “But most of all, give them a future – a future that they can share with the people of St. Kitts and Nevis in years to come.”
Leeward Islands Territorial Development Officer Junie Mitcham coordinated the workshop and explained that it fulfilled his expectations.
“I was very pleased with the execution of the workshop,” he stated. “I think [facilitator Glentine] Wattley did an exceptional job and the participants expressed this in their assessment,” he indicated. “They welcomed the lessons and although, they didn’t agree with every point made, the participants all understood their role and pledged to work to help protect the young children.”
Mr. Mitcham encouraged persons in Nevis to prepare for the staging of the workshop on May 09.
