Green Valley Global's Walk For Seniors A Remarkable Success

By: Green Valley Global, Press Release

Green Valley Global 2014  --  Despite a steady flurry of early morning rain showers on Saturday April 26, 2014, a contingent of enthusiastic walkers embarked on the fourth annual Green Valley Global 3K Walk through Central Park from 110th Street and Central Park West in Harlem, New York.

The morning walk commenced shortly after 8:30am following brief welcome remarks from Green Valley Global's PRO T. C. Phipps-Benjamin and a stirring word of prayer from first time GVG walker Ms. Gwen Pinkett, member of the Mount Carmel Pentecostal Church in the Bronx, New York.

While the walkers enjoyed the beautiful sights at various vantage points in historic Central Park, a hearty and healthful breakfast was lovingly prepared for them. Within an hour and a half of the start of the annual walk, participants gathered for breakfast, socializing and a presentation on health care and insurance options presented by Mr. Abdoulaye Ndao on behalf of his company Affinity Health Care.

Green Valley Global's President Ms. Glennis Phoenix gave opening remarks and thanked all in attendance for supporting a very noble cause while Treasurer Delores Wilkes reminded patrons that their donations assist the Green Valley Festival committee in St. Kitts to host the annual Luncheon and Gala for seniors in the Green Valley area to be held this year on Sunday May 30, 2014.

Mr. Ndao's presentation was a timely opportunity to speak to the Affordable Health Care Act and the importance of understanding how it affects individuals and families. Mr. Ndao featured feasible health care plans for immigrants as well as individuals seeking alternate health coverage plans to their current health plan. He reminded guests of the open enrollment period which runs from November to February, allowing prospects an insight into some of the guidelines of Affintity Health Care plans.

Mr. Ndao's presentation was very well received and the early morning guests were also appreciative of the complimentary tokens he provided, which included pens, miniature flashlights, coloring books and crayons for the kids as well as brochures on the various Affinity Health Care plans.

The guests socialized and indulged in the smorgasbord of delicious breakfast choices which included fruits, yogurt cups, juices, salt fish, green bananas, boiled and scrambled eggs, breakfast fries banana fritters, and rolls.

Following the main speaker's presentation, Mr. Lennox Liburd thanked all those who participated in the walk as well as those whose efforts made the breakfast a remarkable success.

Of notable mention is the support GVG organizers received from other organizations whose members attended the walk and breakfast including the New York/St. Peter's Alumni, COMPAS Inc., The St. Kitts/Nevis Soccer Graduates, the SAPFMC (Say A Prayer For My Country) and Sandy Point Benevolent Society (SPBS).

Individuals from the St. Kitts-Nevis Mission also attended Saturday's event. Donations from other well wishers and organizations also help greatly to defray the costs associated with hosting the Seniors Gala.

The annual Seniors Gala has been sponsored by GVG every year for the past four years and it has fast become a unique opportunity to recognize the community's seniors at a time of the year when many individuals are caught up with the reverie of the Green Valley Festival.

GVG also partners with young people from the community so that they can gain hands on experience with the Seniors Gala and eventually bear the responsibility of spearheading an initiative of this magnitude. The event includes soulful entertainment for the seniors, lunch and gifts. Take away meals are provided for seniors who are physically unable to attend. GVG is hopeful that this initiative is one of the ways the adults can successfully pass the baton to the youths.

The breakfast ended on an extremely high note as patrons ventured to their various homes shortly after 1PM. The organization's treasurer and assistant treasurer has preported receiving over $800 in donations so far.

On June 15, 2014, Green Valley Global's Seventh annual Father's Day event to be held in Harlem, New York will celebrate "Men In Music," an evening of recognition of some of our nation's finest musicians who are also philanthropists in their own right. Kenrick Georges, Trevor Bridgewater and Delbert Gumbs will be acknowledged for their work in music and the SKN community at home and abroad. St. Kitts International Queen Ms. Stacey Greene will host the much anticipated event.

In November, GVG will present its 4th annual children's festival showcasing the talent of our children, the world citizens of tomorrow.

Thanks to all who support the work that Green Valley Global continues to do at home and in the Diaspora.
