Paved roads for Carifesta villagers

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - IT is expected that in a matter of weeks, unpaved roads in the vicinity of Carifesta Village will be paved.

One of the roads that has caused concern for residents of the area is the dirt road which runs from what is popularly known as “The Mango Tree” into Carifesta Village.

Since the housing development was created close to 15 years ago, that particular road has not been paved.

Approximately one week ago however, it was observed that heavy equipment was in the area grading the road - as it would appear - to prepare it for paving.

This publication made contact with Director of the Public Works Department Cromwell Williams, who confirmed that the aforementioned road is one earmarked for paving.

“That road along with others in the immediate vicinity are about to be surfaced. The work will be done by CONTEC DT on behalf of (the) Public Works Department. As you have noticed, they have already started the grading so the work has actually started. I would expect that over the next couple of weeks the work will be ongoing.”

SKNVibes understands that one of the main reasons for the road not been paved up until this point, is that there was some difficulty with drainage.

Williams however explained that that has been taken into consideration.

“The work that would be done would be the construction of the road and associated drainage. So we have taken into account in the design the need to have the road and the area drained as well. So that is accounted for.”

The Director said other unpaved roads around the area are also scheduled to be paved. He also explained that it is part of the Public Works Department’s continuous road improvement programme which began sometime ago.

“This is part of the overall project. As a matter of fact, we are currently doing similar work at a few areas; at Estridge Housing Development, at Verchild’s, at Newton Ground, (and) Pleasant View up at Shadwell. So we are quite busy in terms of putting in roads in some of these housing developments that have been without roads for some time.

“We have stepped up not just in construction of new roads, but in resurfacing of roads. You would have noticed that we have also done some work on Central Street. We had some problems when some of our equipment went down just after that, but as soon as the equipment is back up we are planning to do some paving in Saddlers. Some of the roads there have not been paved for a long time and really need some resurfacing. So we’ll be heading over to Saddlers to do some work.”
