BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 12th, 2014 -- Attorney Jonel Powell gave a very well received presentation at the second lef of the Team UNITY “Listening Tour” Townhall Meeting series at the Village Community Center. The young dynamic popular Team UNITY Candidate for Central Basseterre gave a sober account of his commitment to spearhead electoral reform that will ultimately help rather than hurt the electoral process.
The vibrant People’s Action Movement Deputy Leader expressed disappointment with the current manner in which the Electoral Office is being run and condemned those who continue to perpetuate far from transparent activities at the Electoral Office. In his presentation Powell focused primarily on changes he believes are warranted at the Electoral office in order for the process to be more transparent including ensuring that political hacks of any political persuasion are not at the head of the office.
In fact, Powell was adamant that despite an Electoral officer’s political allegiance, any appointee to the electoral office MUST be able to function in as transparent a manner as possible. Given the many breaches to the current voter registration process, Powell deems a full re-registration and not just re-confirmation as the answer to more legitimate and transparent process.
The insightful presentation of the young and very capable politician also spoke to the foreign voters suggesting that while overseas nationals have the right to so exercise their franchise, he suggested the approach undertaken by the current administration is rife with corruption. He declared that the Electoral Reform that Team UNITY will pursue will include the overhaul to the voter's registration process will also take into account overseas nationals.
On various points made by Mr. Powel, the audience was clearly moved to applaud him and their attentive and supportive demeanor was an indication that Jonel’s very detailed presentation was well received.
Our First National Hero his Excellency Sir Robert Bradshaw along with other heroes like CA Paul Southwell, JN France, Manchester, Sebastian all fought for democracy and it’s preservation. The true preservation of democracy cannot be achieved without proper electoral reform. Thus there is little wonder Powell and Team UNITY’s commitment to proper electoral reform is being so well received .
The constituents of C3 (Constituency #3) and others in attendance left Thursday night's “Listening Tour” Townhall Meeting in extremely high spirits thanks to the brilliant presentations of all the speakers!
The wheels of Team Unity are steadily turning and the momentum is building in great anticipation for the ushering in of a new political energy in every home, in every village throughout the entire federation.
