Town Hall meetings allow communications between government and people

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, FEBRUARY 26TH 2009 (CUOPM) - St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas says the current series of town hall meetings is another vehicle that allows citizens and residents to ask questions of his governing Labour Administration.
 
He said the meetings will also allow the government to hear directly from the people.
 
“We want to hear your ideas and your suggestions. We want to know how we as a government can make government work better for all of the people of this constituency in particular and all of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis in general,” said Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas at Monday’s Town Hall Meeting at the Old Road Community Center.
 
He told the large gathering that government wants to continue to engage nationals not only in St. Kitts and Nevis, but also overseas so that all efforts can be made to make the twin-island federation a better place for all to live.
 
“We the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis continue to be on course for change. We the people of St. Kitts and Nevis will continue to be on course for change. We the people of this constituency will continue to be on course for change,” said Prime Minister Douglas, pointing out that over the last 13 years the people of St. Kitts have seen tremendous change, transformation and development and which have impacted the lives of all.
 
“We have seen a government – bold and decisive and unafraid to tackle the challenges that confronted us in the national economy,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
 
Referring to the decision to close the loss-making sugar industry in 2005, which would have ruined the national economy, Prime Minister Douglas said the new economy has ushered in opportunities for economic, social and political development.
 
“Transforming the economy from a one-crop sugar economy to tourism and hospitality, communications and information technology services and financial services, is evidence of my St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Government changing St. Kitts and Nevis for the better,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
 
“Look at what we have done in this country as part of the social development of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Prime Ministr Douglas, who referred to his government’s record in housing, education, healthcare, social security, communications and technology, tourism including vital air connection between St. Kitts and Nevis and North America and the United Kingdom, hotel development, agriculture, fisheries, and land and home empowerment.
