May 19th, 2014   --   A Denim Day will be hosted this Friday by Government to raise funds for flood relief efforts in the Caribbean.

Late last year the Eastern Caribbean was battered by heavy rains which caused severe flooding in the region. Fifteen people died, while more than 33,000 were impacted by the loss of homes and vital infrastructure.

To support relief efforts, Government has announced the Denim Day for the Civil/Public Service, including the Island’s public schools.

Chair of the Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO), Minister of National Security Michael Dunkley said: “The goal is to get the funds to the agencies who are directly assisting those in need.

“The Bermuda Government’s Valentine’s Denim Day fundraiser would be in support of the victims of Dominica, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines. We tend to take for granted how fortunate we are here in Bermuda, but Mother Nature is indiscriminate and disaster can strike at any time.

“As an Associate Member of CARICOM, we are pleased to do whatever we can to help our friends and neighbours to our south.”

Minimum contributions of $5 for adults and $2 for students are encouraged and donations can be made directly to the West Indian Association (Bermuda) through the special relief fund HSBC Account No: 011 055 662 001.

The West Indian Association (Bermuda) have already announced a series of events to raise funds for those affected, including the “Give from the Heart — Valentine’s Night Caribbean Party” on Saturday February 15th at the Police Recreation Club.
