Celebration will help Caribbean flood victim

May 19th, 2014  -- The Island’s Caribbean community unites this Friday for an annual bash courtesy of the West Indian Association — with this year’s gathering also raising money in aid of Caribbean flood victims.

“When we come together as island people, we don’t just celebrate one — we celebrate all the islands,” said West Indian Association president Chandra Persaud.

Part of the proceeds from the semi-formal at the Riddell’s Bay Golf Club will go to ongoing relief efforts for St Vincent, St Lucia and Dominica, which were lashed by deadly Christmas floods.

A dance to be held on Valentine’s Day will also raise funds for the cause.

“We’re not trying to do anything for an immediate response; there are already teams in place down there,” Ms Persaud said. “But there is a lot of damage to the infrastructure that needs refurbishing.

“They are talking now about relocation from places that have been affected. So we want to help with the recovery and will probably also ask for proceeds to go toward specific funds.”

The annual January get-together has been hosted by the West Indian Association for more than five years as a way for the Island’s diverse Caribbean community to meet up after Christmas.

Tickets are $100, and can be bought at The Edge in Washington Mall, Hamilton. Friday’s event starts with drinks at 7pm.

Tickets for the Valentine’s Day dance, which will be held at the Police Recreation Club from 9pm, are available for $30.
