May 19h, 2014   --  The West Indian Association (Bermuda) are planning a series of fundraising events to help those affected by flooding in the West Indies.

Association president Chandra Persad, said that St Vincent and The Grenadines and St Lucia were both devastated by heavy rains and flooding in the region, with the governments of both countries declaring level two disasters requiring external assistance.

“Collectively, 15 deaths have been reported and over 33,000 persons affected by the torrential downpour.

“Losses are estimated to be in the millions. Homes have been destroyed, and infrastructure damaged. Medical supplies and basic necessities are in short supply,” Ms Persad said.

“We and our partners are still receiving and collating information on the recovery efforts underway in those countries so as to determine the priority needs.

“Our Bermuda community has always been very supportive with assisting other countries with disaster relief efforts so we ask for everyone’s continued support of our local fundraising efforts.”

She said the group are working with Vincentians and St Lucians in Bermuda, the Government, the Opposition and other groups to find ways to help the affected communities.

On January 31, the association will be hosting its annual New Year’s Dinner and Dance at the Riddell’s Bay Golf and Country Club, with a portion of proceeds going toward flood relief.

And the group has also organised a Valentine’s Night Caribbean Party on February 14 at the Police Recreational Club, from which all proceeds will go to relief efforts.

She said that other activities are being scheduled with other partners, adding that members of the public can also make donations directly to the West Indian Association (Bermuda) through HSBC Account No: 011 055 662 001.
