Roadtown, Tortola - Government is hopeful that several activities to observe International Women’s Day will receive strong community support, while promoting gender equity.

Head of the Office of Gender Affairs Ms. Patricia Hackett is encouraging the community to support the week of activities, which is scheduled to run from March 2 – 8. International Women’s Day will be observed on March 8, under the theme ‘Women and Men United to Build Healthier Relationships’.

Ms. Hackett said a local inter-agency committee is coordinating several activities to observe the day.

“International Women's Day is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political, and social achievements of women. Therefore it is important for us to support this worthwhile event. The planned activities are intended to achieve that goal,” noted Ms. Hackett.

Activities scheduled during the week include a visit to the female prison at Balsam Ghut; two seminars on sexual and reproductive health and managing all aspects of family life and work; and an afternoon of entertainment on March 8 at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park. There will also be several guest appearances on the ‘Almanac’ which is heard on ZBVI Radio.
