CFBC launches BSc in Nursing, Post Graduate Diploma in Education and UWI Level One Programmes

By: CFBC, Press Release

May 21st, 2014  --  The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC) in its quest to broaden educational opportunities and expand academic qualifications in a globally competitive work environment is proud and excited to announce the official launch of three new/revitalized programmes on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 10:00am at the Burdon Street Campus, Basseterre.

The Division of Health Sciences (Department of Nursing Education) will create history when the Bachelor of Science Degree (BSc) in Nursing commences later this year. And shortly, the Division of Teacher Education will inaugurate the Post Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary). Additionally, there is an energized thrust in the continued offer of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Level One Programme.

The primary aim of the BSc Nursing Degree Programme, done through the UWI School of Nursing at the Mona Campus, is to prepare graduates for entry level nursing practice in today’s dynamic and diverse health care environments. The programme is designed to provide students with a broad-based, comprehensive and essential foundation in the art, science, principles and techniques of nursing as well as the requisite knowledge, skills and attitudes not only for general nursing, but also to assume leadership and management roles in nursing.

The Post Graduate Diploma in Education (Secondary), done through the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados, is an In-Service programme for secondary teachers who possess a first degree but have not been exposed to any professional training in teaching. The major emphasis of the programme is to help teachers function with a high degree of effectiveness in the classroom in the context of a rapidly changing global, regional and school environment by exposing them to a range of relevant experiences and processes.

At the same time, equal emphasis will be placed on helping the teacher develop as a high quality, discerning professional who recognises the importance of lifelong learning, self-assessment and continuous professional development. Integration of Theory and Practice will be emphasized in this programme. Teachers will develop an understanding of critical philosophical, sociological, and psychological factors which affect the learning and development of children and adolescents.

The UWI Level One Programme offers an affordable opportunity for aspiring students to the UWI. Upon the approval of an application by the University, students can take their first year of studies through the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College before going onsite, either to the UWI Cave Hill Campus in Barbados or the UWI St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad. The Level One programme offers courses in The Faculty of Humanities and The Faculty of Science and Technology at the Cave Hill Campus, while the St. Augustine Campus offers courses in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Courses offered include majors in Accounting, Economics, International Relations, Management Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, Public Sector Management and Psychology. Minors are also offered in disciplines such as Marketing, Mathematics, Human Resource Management, Finance and Law. Foundation Courses include English for Academic Purposes, Science, Medicine and Technology in Society, Law, Governance, Economy and Society and Caribbean Civilization. Students must satisfy the requirements for a minimum of (30) credits under the Level One Programme.

Additional Information on the new programmes can be obtained from the CFBC by calling 465-2856/8791.
