PM Douglas’ Labour Government takes measures for nationals to get nursing degree and education diploma at home

By: Erasmus Williams, Press Release (CUOPM)

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, May 21st 2014 (CUOPM) – The St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Government has taken more steps for nationals to pursue tertiary-level degrees and diplomas at home.

Cabinet has approved the roll out by the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (CFBC), of a number of new programmes, namely the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree and the Diploma in Education (DipED). There will also be a re-launch of the UWI-level I programme.

“The introduction of the BScN signals a commitment towards improving training for nurses and towards the overall improvement of the quality of service in the health care sector. The DipEd provides an opportunity for educational professionals to upgrade and sharpen their qualifications and skills in their field of practice,” said Minister of Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty.

He said the new programmes being offered by the CBFC provide nationals and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis with the rare opportunity of pursuing studies in these critical areas right at home.

“These programmes will be offered to nationals in particular at very affordable rates. However, the offering of these courses requires the injection of significant sums of money and other resources by government to enable their effective delivery,” said Minister Carty.

He said the Cabinet, under the chairmanship of Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas, approved the allocation of additional funds and also approved a subsidy package for local students for these courses.

The CFBC will officially launch these courses and more information will be made available at that time.
