BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WORD of a shooting incident that occurred last evening (Feb. 26) has given rise to conflicting information of its occurrence from law enforcement personnel and persons who were in the vicinity.

According to unconfirmed sources, a local football team was hosting a meeting at The Gardens Playing Field in Irishtown when, sometime between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., two masked individuals dressed in dark clothing approached and attempted to fire a shot at a young man who was in the area.

One source explained that the gun apparently jammed and the intended victim decided to flee on foot from the area. The source added that the assailants ran after the young man and was shooting at him.

Another source who was in the area with a group of persons said when they heard the first shot they mistook it for pyrotechnics (fireworks). However, on hearing the second shot, the source claimed it was evident that they were not fireworks but rather the sound of gunshots.

“Then we saw the two young men chasing another young man and we saw smoke coming from what appears to be a gun,” an eye witness said. The attackers were reportedly small in stature.

Other reports suggest that a total of six gunshots were fired during the incident.

Police Press and Public Relations Officer, Inspector Cromwell Henry informed this media house that after they received the report of the sound of gunshots being fired, officers were dispatched to the area to investigate.

He said, following investigations, the officers found no evidence, inclusive of damaged property and spent shells, of a shooting.

Inspector Henry said the only evidence that a shooting incident occurred is the report that was made to the police.
