Press Release

May 22nd 2014 - From 16th to 18th May 2014, 72  bridge players – 16 from St.Lucia, 16 from Martinique, 8 from Guadeloupe, 8 from Barbados, 6 from Dominica, 6 from Antigua, 4 from Grenada, 4 from Trinidad and Tobago, 2 from Anguilla and 2 from St.Kitts participated in St.Lucia at the Bay Gardens Hotel in the 27th O.E.C.S Bridge Championships.

Since you need 4 players in each team, St.Lucia kindly gave permission for Anguilla and St.Kitts to join up and play as a national team.

On Friday 16th May, 2014, the Pairs Tournament was played and won by Jean Pierre Bouveresse and Philippe Mathieu of Guadeloupe. The French also finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Alan Gumbs and Nigel Roydon of Anguilla finished 10th; Sam Franks and Ian Slack of St.Kitts finished a disappointing 27th out of 36 pairs. Franks and Slack won this tournament last year in Antigua.

On Saturday 17th May, 2014, the teams participated; 12 teams in the Open Teams and 5 in the O.E.C.S Teams. In the Open Teams, first again was Guadeloupe, 2nd – Barbados, 3rd – St.Lucia and 4th – Martinique.

From the five O.E.C.S Teams: Dominica won with 54 victory points, 2nd Anguilla/St.Kitts with 49 and Antigua with 46. The other two teams were St.Lucia and Grenada.

On Sunday 18th May, 2014; Dominica and Anguilla/St.Kitts played in the finals and like last year in Antigua, Dominica was victorious. In the Swiss Teams, 15 of them, St.Lucia finished first with their O.E.C.S Team.

Trophies were awarded to the winners and Ian Slack, presented the trophy that he donated in 2008 to Dominica. Speeches were made by Urban Dolor, President of St.Lucia and Liz McLean who invited us to the 28th tournament in Grenada in the last week of April, 2015.

Our director was once again Mrs. Jackie Thompson out of Barbados. St.Lucia were great hosts and it was wonderful to meet our many bridge friends again.

We must also thank our caddies: Michelle, Tamika and Renee.

Once again, for the 27th year, LIAT gave us a passage discount, for which we are eternally grateful and the St.Lucia government
