Press Release

Thursday, May 22, 2014 - In an effort to coordinate and monitor the implementation of social protection and human development initiatives in the Territory, Cabinet has appointed a National Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD).

Persons appointed to the Council are Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Mrs. Petrona Davies, Chairperson; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Dr. Marcia Potter, Deputy Chairperson; Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Irad Potter; Chief Social Development Officer, Mrs. Annie Malone-Frett; Coordinator of Gender Affairs, Ms. Lorolie Connor; Chief Education Officer, Mrs. Jillian Douglas-Phillip; Director of Culture, Mrs. Luce Hodge-Smith; Director of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mr. Patrick Harrigan; Chief Labour Officer, Mrs. Janice Rymer; and Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Health Services Authority, Mrs. Darlene Carty-Baptiste.

The membership represents a cross-section of agencies with the intent to engage in the shaping and implementation of social policy.  Sub-committees would also co-opt representatives from other agencies, non-profit organisations and the private sector to support the work of the Council, as the need arises.

Permanent Secretary Mrs. Petrona Davies said, “Coordination is required across governmental agencies to ensure timely and effective implementation of recommendations stemming from the Social Sector Analysis Report; National Gender Policy; Youth Health and Sexuality Report; and the pending National Youth Policy; Healthy Ageing Policy; National Action Plan for Children; Disability Policy; National Strategic Plan for HIV/AIDS and other STIs; among other cross-cutting social policies.”

The local body will also coordinate its efforts with the regional Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD), one of the principal organs of CARICOM that was established to promote human and social development in the Caribbean Community.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development endeavours to provide leadership which promotes health, social well-being and a safe environment for all residents of this Territory.
