BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 28th, 2014 -- One of our federation's treasures is celebrating the gift of life.
He is a husband, father, grandfather, brother, educator, social commentator, activist, author and friend whose 80th birthday milestone allows the people of our nation an opportunity to reminisce and marvel at his many contributions to nation building.
George Washington Archibald was born on May 28, 1934. His childhood may have been marred in part by the worldwide economic challenges of the day, but in his world, life was to be lived to its fullest. Washy, as he is called was an adventurous and intelligent youngster. His parents, Ella Dasent and George Albert Archibald could never have foreseen their union producing such a fearless national visionary whose career as an educator and social activist would span well over fifty years.
George Washington Archibald educated hundreds of the federation's students. He authored several books including, "A View from Baby's Traffic. literary work that examines the political and social development of St. Kitts during the 1950's.
As a child of post slavery St. Kitts, life the way George Washington Archibald envisioned it called for movers and shakers armed with a burning desire to make a difference regardless to the heavy presence of dissenting voices. Washy was always ready to let his voice be heard!
In honor of his outstanding achievements, the former Basseterre Junior High School was renamed the George Washington Archibald High School. His contributions to the federation have not gone unnoticed.
Eighty years since he graced the world stage, George Washington Archibald has been a champion of our nation who has chosen never to back down from his belief in pursuing truth and justice.
A political visionary at best, Washy was the familiar voice on his weekly talk show titled "Ask Washy" where he was vociferous in his call for a government of national Unity. Archibald is also renowned for his work with young people and spearheaded the Project Strong, an institution that transformed the lives of many young people.
Archibald has been an advocate for the poor and a voice for the lowly. He has stood up in the face of injustice, condemned wrong as he saw it regardless of the political side called out for the charge.
Almost one year ago, many of Washy's everyday activities were severely impaired when he fell victim to a sudden illness. Today, George Washington Archibald has been granted the grace of the creator in attaining another birthday despite his medical challenges.
As he celebrates 80 years as a citizen of the human race, today is a great opportunity to acknowledge the remarkable contributions he has made to our entire nation.
