Hamilton Reflects on PAM’s Visionary History in the Development of the Federation and St.Kitts-Nevis Relations at Huge Historic PAM Convention

By: Public Relations Office of PAM, Press Release
Basseterre, St. Kitts May 28, 2014, (PAMCOM)   --  People’s Action Movement Deputy Political Leader the Hon. Eugene Hamilton took the opportunity at the historic 49th Convention of the St.Kitts-Nevis Main Opposition Party PAM  to reflect on the visionary Leadership that was provided by a People’s Action Movement Party in government and the positive impact that has had on St.Kitts-Nevis and their relations and in particular the development of Nevis.

Hamilton said “On this 49th anniversary convention I reflect on the days when on a boat named K-NEW, PAM took life sustaining water across to our brothers and sisters in Nevis.

I reflect on that fateful decision of Sir Kennedy and Sir Simeon that had resulted in a Nation that is now thirty years old.

I reflect on the fact that so little was done to provide electricity on Nevis before 1980 and I reflect on the day when under a PAM NRP government a generator was commissioned for the first time providing the opportunity to introduce lights at the New Castle airport so that aircrafts were able to land and take off for the first time. That decision removed the fun poked by some Kittitians (in the words of my grandmother "St. Kitts moonlight a shine pon stick") as Nevis too experienced the expansion of electricity lighting on poles across Nevis

I reflect also on St. Kitts where thirty percent of our homes had no running water and where outdoor pit latrines filled with cockroaches. I recall that in ten short years eighty percent of the households were connected with running water and with indoor toilet facilitates.”

Hamilton went on to highlight the ushering of an Independent St.Kitts-Nevis and the very capable Leadership that was provided by the country’s first Prime Mnister the Rt. Hon. Dr Sir Kennedy A Simmonds and our most recent national hero the Hon. Dr. Sir Simeon Daniel. He declared that the leadership experienced then where two visionary men from either side of the narrows came together in the interest of country is the same vision and imagination that is taking place now where 3 politicalm parties from both sides of the narrows have come together to put country above self in a Team UNITY.

The Constituency #8 Representative said “We became an independent people who enjoyed doing things for ourselves. We experienced the introduction of modern fiber optic telecommunications and other important infrastructure that assisted in fueling our growth and development, making our Federation a leader not only in the Caribbean but in Latin America as well.

The vision and imagination that we saw during a PAM-NRP government moved to another level and we saw the development of the Cruise Port now called Port Zante and the six mile Kennedy Simmonds Highway; both of which are at the pinnacle of economic development in the Federation today.”

“It is that kind of Imagination that is needed today and that which reside in the leadership of Team Unity. We must remove the vision that has cost us $260 million to create a mosquito nest in Sandy Point,” Hamilton stated.

He concluded “ I therefore leave you and urge you as I leave to choose

    •         Hope over Despair
    •         Unity over Division
    •         Inclusion over Exclusion
    •         Integrity over Dishonesty
    •         Servant Leadership over Dictatorship
    •         Sustainable Development over Impending Disaster

And to those of you who are here from Constituency #8; choose Eugene Hamilton over he or she who comes from Douglas Labour.”
