Basseterre, St. Kitts (May 16, 2014) – Extraordinary telecommunications company Digicel has partnered with the Ministry of Gender Affairs to offer critical support for teen mothers in St. Kitts and Nevis.

For the entire month of May, three 4G BlackBerry Smartphones (BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Curve 9320 and BlackBerry Curve 9720) will be available at up to 40% off their original price. A portion of each sale will be donated to Project Viola, a decade-old programme that assists teenage mothers to return to school, find jobs and provides career-based training.

During a ZIZ Television interview, Marketing Manager for Digicel St. Kitts and Nevis, Marsha Chatterjee said the project provides a well-suited opportunity for the company to assist the young mothers in a tangible way. “We decided to partner with the Ministry because we wanted to touch the lives of young moms in particular. Many of these moms after having their children find it difficult to return to school or even afford the day to day cost of living and this is something that really touches our hearts”.

Director of Gender Affairs, and Project Manager, Etsu Bradshaw-Caines said that it is important for young women to know that there is a place where they can be empowered to be successful even after becoming teen mothers.

“We do have women who have come through Project Viola who are now doctors and lawyers,” said Bradshaw-Caines. “So we’re here to provide assistance including counselling and financial services and empower these girls as well as the men to provide for their families and still achieve their goals.”

Today marks the final weekend whereby persons wishing to assist the teen mothers of Project Viola may purchase any of the listed Digicel handsets at a special sale price. The project will then receive a portion of each sale of the selected handsets. The hand-over to Project Viola is scheduled for early June.
