By: Pauline Waruguru, SKNVibes

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – THE fund-raising Gala hosted by the Pink Lily organization last Saturday night at Occasions was a fun-filled event and also a great breast cancer awareness forum.

The event, which was part of a number of activities to raise $50 000 to screen 200 women, was attended by persons from all walks of life including medical doctors.

One of the medical practitioners was Dr. Cardell Rawlins of Rawlins Clinic, who told awareness campaign supporters that they have the power to lobby local government to implement a national insurance scheme. He said that would go a long way in creating the right medical environment to facilitate early screening, treatment and management of breast cancer.

While saying that a lot of money was spent in sending patients overseas, Dr. Rawlins called on the government to invest in putting in place necessary structures needed to manage and treat breast cancer.

Dr. Glenville Liburd said all human beings have dignity and called on stakeholders to enlist to fight cancer. He said it was difficult to fight cancer without money and resources.

He also said a bill ought to be passed for the establishment of the necessary mechanism to fight breast cancer. He too lamented the large sums of money spent on treatment overseas.

Guests were treated to a number of activities, including a fashion show, where local and regional designer clothing were showcased, and testimonies by breast cancer survivors.
