Police appeal to motorists during Green Valley Festival

Sergeant Carl Greaux
Carl Greaux

    Basseterre, St. Kitts - With the Calendar of Events of the Green Valley Festival starting today (May 31) and ending on Monday (June 9), there will be a considerable increase in the amount of foot and vehicular traffic in the Cayon District - from Canada Estate to Ottleys Village - which will increase the risk of traffic accidents.

    In light of the above, the Police at the Cayon Police Station are asking the general public to adhere to these traffic safety tips in order to reduce the likelihood of the occurrence of traffic accidents.

    (1) Persons should drive cautiously when entering the Cayon District, because the said district will be congested during the events;
    (2) Persons may use alternative routes - that is streets that less congested;
    (3) To ease congestion and reduce the likelihood of a traffic accident, persons attending these events should consider the use of public transportation or carpool;
    (4) Persons must avoid drinking and driving. Alcohol impairs a person’s ability to judge distance and speed and therefore increase the risk of an accident;
    (5) Persons must always wear seat belts and drive according to the road conditions and, at the same time, always within the speed limit;
    (6) Always look out for pedestrians and give them the right of way when crossing the road and never overtake at pedestrian crossings; and
    (7) Please avoid overtaking passenger buses that have stopped for passengers to disembark or, if you must do so, let it be done with extreme caution.
