Family members still seeking public’s financial assistance

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE young man who allegedly shot his father on Wednesday night (May 28) in Nevis was reportedly charged with Attempted Murder.

According to a police press release, following the investigation into the shooting of Shawn ‘Fisherman’ Chatram of Stoney Grove, the Violent Crime Unit (VCU) in Nevis has formally arrested and charged his 24-year-old son, Kunkarran Chatram of the same address, for the offence of Attempted Murder.

Kunkarran allegedly shot his father in the mouth and chest at or about 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Pinney’s Beach.

A previous police release stated that initial investigation by the VCU revealed that the senior Chatram had identified his son as the person who shot him.

This publication learnt that Chatram, who was unable to speak, had informed the police who shot him by writing it on paper.

Chatram has since been transported in critical but stable condition by air ambulance to Barbados, where he was scheduled to undergo major operations and remedial treatment at that island’s premier medical institution, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Gavon Woolward, one of Chatram’s fellow Ministering Brothers at the Grace of Truth Assembly in Prospect Estate, told SKNVibes that some US$10 000 was paid for the air ambulance and that the surgery and remedial treatment would cost an estimated US$30 000; money that the wounded man, his family members and friends do not possess.

They are therefore seeking the public’s assistance in meeting his medical bills and have opened an account at Scotia Bank with the hope that “God will guide generous hands to fulfill this moment of need”.

Woolward said that the account number is 51541914 and that those who are desirous of contributing, however small, to the saving of Chatram’s life but would not do so through the bank, could contact him by telephone at 665-1975.

Chatram, a widower for some five years, together with his only child, Kunkarran, would regularly traverse the Caribbean Sea as fishermen (especially at nights).

However, information reaching this publication stated that they were having domestic problems and that sometime during the week prior to him being shot, Chatram had thrown the 24-year-old out of their home after repeatedly cautioning him about the life he wants to live and the friends he keeps.

Additional information stated that after being shot, Chatram drove himself to the hospital and that his son was arrested there when he assumedly went to check on his father’s condition.

The press release stated that the matter is one of serious concern to Commissioner Celvin ‘CG’ Walwyn and other members of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, as well as all law abiding and civic minded persons in the twin-island Federation.

“Therefore, Commissioner CG Walwyn takes this opportunity to encourage both juvenile and adult children living with their parents to humble themselves and respect the authority of their parents, and also to encourage parents to be good role models to their children and give them the proper nurturing and training that are required to harness in the minds of the children that they ought to be law abiding citizens and have respect for themselves and to be good and productive citizens of the country”, it added.
