June 6th, 2014   --   As part of celebrating the pillars of the Green Valley community and in essence the federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, the 4th annual Seniors Luncheon was held in Cayon at the Bethesda Moravian Moravian School last Sunday June 1, 2014.

About 40 Seniors were seated and showered with the royal treatment as they indulged in a sumptuous dinner which included refreshing drinks, wine and an array of tasty but not too sweet dessert treats. Assisting members of the Green Valley committee was a team of volunteers including some of the area's young people who were also instrumental in delivering meals to several of the community's shut ins.

A significant part of the evening's entertainment included performances by the infamous Zack Nesbitt Children's String Band. The group of young boys and girls performed multiple pieces during the afternoon's event which was hosted by Richard Isaac, a faithful member of the Bethesda Moravian Church.

The seniors showed a genuine appreciation for the opportunity to fellowship and many were clearly moved by the outpouring of support that came from volunteers who simply wanted to give the seniors an opportunity to feel special. Some of the seniors danced and sang, a show of appreciation for the young musicians. Centurion, Mother Isaac wowed the audience with her lusty rendition of "How Great Thou Art" and she was beautifully decked out in her green attire.

While there were several seniors who attended the event before, Sunday was the first encounter for a few of the seniors and they too enjoyed themselves immensely. Sunday was also a stark reminder of those beloved seniors whose earthly journey has come to an end leaving behind a plethora of memories for their loved ones to cherish. May their departed souls be at eternal peace.

The evening ended on a high note with farewells, hugs and warm utterances of best wishes to bring the curtains down on the annual event that acknowledges the seniors of the Green Valley community.

The success of the Seniors Luncheon was due in part to the Herculean efforts of the Green Valley Festival committee members who in addition to working tirelessly to make the event a success also drummed up the assistance of other community members. The New York based sister organization Green Valley Global was also an instrumental partner in this initiative as members engaged in fund raising activities in New York City to help defray costs related to the event. The committed citizens who have spearheaded this initiative for the past four years are hopeful they can continue to sponsor this highly anticipated Seniors affair.

A huge "Green Valley" thanks to ALL who helped make the 2014 Seniors luncheon a success. Organizers are highly anticipating hosting the event for a historic fifth time next year.

In other "Green Valley" news, the Green Valley Festival took off on Thursday night, June 5 with an extremely well supported Recognition and Awards Dinner at the Cayon Community Center. Thursday night was a strong indication of a community of people brimming with "Green Valley pride" and it is clear that despite the numerous challenges over the last eighteen years, the Green Valley Festival has withstood the test of time and is gunning for its 20th year of celebration and beyond. Outgoing Festival Committee Chairman, Douglas Wattley encouraged those in attendance to support the incoming Chairman Mr. Jebu Isaac who is committed to the work of the festival and community.

On Friday June 6, the Green Valley Queens will strut their stuff at the Sandbox/Maynard's Park from 8pm. Saturday night is a must see home grown concert with local acts while Sunday will feature more sports and community events along with a Beach Bash at Keys.

The festival high is on Monday, June 9 with a much anticipated energy filled Jouvert morning and the parade of troupes from 1pm, bringing the curtains down on the 18 year old Community Festival.

All of the events that make the Green Valley Festival the success it continues to be are sponsored by individuals, organizations and institutions who understand the value in community building. They commit their resources year after year to the community festival which has had significant contributions from stalwarts who are no longer with us, including Vernon Benjamin and Brenda Burroughs.

The baton has been passed from one generation to the next and despite the many hiccups, the community continues to rally behind their festival.

Thanks again to ALL who believe in the work of the Green Valley Festival  committee, its partners Green Valley Global and its sponsors.
