Team UNITY Proposes Solutions to Education and Health Woes

Team UNITY Communications Press Release

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, June 6th   2014 (TUCOM):-The worsening condition of the education and health sectors was a matter on the minds of the huge audience at Team Unity’s Listening Tour Townhall Meeting  in Challengers last night. Several questions were posed on the deteriorating state of education and healthcare in St Kitts.

Dr Harris told the large gathering that Team Unity will make education and healthcare key platforms in the transformation of the society into an educated, healthy, disciplined, and productive society. Team Unity sees education as an investment in the country’s development and a critical platform to the achievement of shared prosperity by all citizens and residents of St Kitts and Nevis.Team Unity is of the view that the time had come for more of our citizens to make comfortable lives for themselves through the use of their God given gifts and talents. The Team Unity government will invest money and provide the necessary support for our citizens to realize there god given potential.

Dr Harris lamented the failure of leadership at the Ministry of Education which has led to the contamination of Basseterre High School (B.H.S).DrHarris said that the situation at B.H.S reflected Ministerial incompetence and arrogance.

Echoing the sentiments of the questioners,Team Unity’s Leader said that the fiasco at B.H.S was typical of the dysfunctionality in the illegitimate government that was out of its depths, unable to provide leadership in the purveying of a quality education.
He empathized with the teachers, students and their parents for the trauma, stress, and physical and respiratory problems which they suffered as a result of the incompetence and arrogance of the outgoing Douglas regime. He appealed to parents to be vigilant about their children’s health and report all ailments to the school.

Questioners pointed out the impending disaster lurking in the health sector. It is the general view that Marcella Liburd has served incompetentlyasMinister of Health. Under Marcella Liburd’s incompetent stewardship, the Joseph N. France Hospital has deteriorated to the point that toilet paper, paper towels and disinfectant are not available in places where they ought to be. Our Haemodialysis Unit lay idle for years while our residents and citizens suffer for want of appropriate treatments and the technicians recruited from thePhilippinesto work in the Haemodialysis Unit are yet to haemodialysea single patient.  The question is how Marcella Liburd could allow this sad state to continue at our main hospital? In the meantime St Kitts and Nevis has one of the highest cases per capita of diabetes, and renal problems.

Atthe Mary Charles Hospital inMolineauxthe physical condition is even worse than at the J.N.F hospital. TheHealth Centre in Tabernacle had to be closed as the roof was collapsing, and rodents were prevalent in the facility. The health center is now relocated to share space at the Tabernacle Daycare facility. No immediate plans have been announced to build a modern healthcare facility at Tabernacle. We can therefore expect that the Health Centrewill continue to share space originally used by the daycare for a very longtime.

The space that was formally available for the daycare facility has been arbitrarily removed by the illegitimate government. Such space was utilized for resting by the children and other activities for the daycare center.

Meanwhile the health workers are reportedly not comfortable in their new quarters. Littleattention is being paid to their comfort at the daycare facility.

    Team Unity proposes:

    1.       To keep health facilities in top condition at all times. We appreciate that the health of our nation is the wealth of our nation and we in Team Unity are for prosperity for all.

    2.      To renovate and expand Mary Charles Hospital into a modern state of the art hospital. The expansion will allow for a maternity ward, an accident and emergency ward and a center of excellence in training of medical students many of whom are under served at the J.N.F hospital.

    3.      To build a modern health center in Tabernacle.

    4.      To make J.N.F our premier health facility and ensuring that it is well managed, well maintained and in a position toalways provide quality service and attention to all its patients.

    5.      To introduce a comprehensive health insurance plan for all citizens regardless of their age thereby ensuring universal access to affordable healthcare for all.

We are committed to Restoring Democracy and Promoting Prosperity in St. Kitts and Nevis. We invite you to join our cause.
