BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE Third Day of the 2014 FIFA World Cup has produced the biggest shock of the tournament thus far, as Costa Rica provided an upset by defeating first World Cup winners and fourth place team in 2010, Uruguay 3-1.
Uruguay took the lead through an Edison Cavani penalty midway through the first half but they failed to capitalise on their goal scoring opportunities during the remainder of the game.
In the second half a new star was born at the World Cup when Costa Rican Joel Campbell scored the equaliser and helped in setting up the second as Óscar Duarte gave his team the shock lead before Marco Ureña sealed victory in the 84th minute.
The biggest game of the day however 2006 Champions Italy, which defeated their English rivals 2-1 in an exciting game.
Claudio Marchisio gave the Italians the lead from 20 yards out in the 35th minute but minutes later Daniel Sturridge provided the equaliser.
Mashable.com reported that England simply had nothing to match the calm control of Italy, the magic of Mario Balotelli or the ruthlessness of Andrea Pirlo, whose frowning, bearded visage seems to have an uncanny ability to stare into English souls.
Balotelli’s 50th minute header was the difference between the two sides as the hot and humid conditions also severely impacted the English at a comeback.
In the day’s first game, Colombia drubbed Greece 3-nill while the Ivory Coast came from behind to defeat Japan 2-1 in the final game.
