BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - BY the end of July the road works being done in the area around Carifesta Village are expected to be completed and those in the Shadwell area by September.
This is according to Director of Public Works Cromwell Williams, who recently gave SKNVibes an update on the road construction and maintenance project that the Public Works Department is overseeing.
The Carifesta Village leg of the project commenced sometime around the beginning of May, 2014 and, to date, two of the roads are approximately 80 percent completed with just the drains now being installed.
At least one other road in that area is also under construction and is being converted from a dirt road to a more permanent concrete thoroughfare.
Williams said the upgrading of the roads would redound to the benefit of the residents of the areas.
“But of course it would make the lives of the residents easier in terms of them not having to deal with soil erosion after heavy rain and dust going into their properties and so on. I am sure they would be quite happy to now have paved roads.”
The Director indicated that simultaneous work is being done in the Shadwell, High Point and Fig Tree areas. In Fig Tree however, a new housing project is being developed by the National Housing Corporation while the roads are being laid at the same time.
He explained that while the roads around Carifesta Village and Shadwell are being laid by CONTEC DT, the High Point leg of the project is being undertaken by Lennox Warner and Partners.
The Estridge Housing Development, Race Course in Newton Ground, Verchild’s Heights and Verchild’s Extension areas - according to Williams - have recently received new or upgraded roads as part of Public Works’ Roads Upgrade Project.
And the Stone Fort Heights and White House (in St. Peter’s) areas have been earmarked for the next leg of the project.
