Family Park retaining wall erected says Min. Liburd

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - WITH walkways, a retaining wall and fencing being placed at the New Road Family Park, Parliamentary Representative for the New Road area the Hon. Marcella Liburd is estimating that the Park would be ready for use by the end of July, 2014.

SKNVibes recently visited the Park on the eastern side of Tegreman Boulevard in New Road and observed that walkways were being placed and fencing being erected around the area.

This publication spoke with Minister Liburd about the progress of the project and she said there was a delay in the delivery in the construction process because some time was taken to get estimates from the various contractors who would be employed to execute the different parts of the second phase of the project.

The first phase includes grading of the land and the mounting of the Park’s (play) equipment. And the second phase - according to the Minister - includes construction of a retaining wall, erection of a fence, laying of walkways and construction of restrooms and a parking area.

“You know we said from the very beginning that we would have a phase two, and we are currently in phase two of the project. We had some gaps in between in terms of getting the estimates for all these various things that were to have been done. Now we have almost finished the walkways, the fencing is also being erected and the retaining wall. We just have some good news because the lights - LED lights - have arrived as well, and so very shortly (they) would be mounted.”

She said contractors have already been assigned to the different parts of phase two, and as each is completed another would begin.

“When we are finished, the fencing should be up and the walkways should be in. Hopefully, we should complete the bathrooms and the parking and the lighting will be up and the landscaping would be done. The first phase was just to erect the actual equipment which are the actual Park items. These are what the Taiwanese mounted; they are the experts in that.”

The Parliamentary Representative said she could not say exactly when the Park would be completed, but estimated sometime in July, at which point an official handing-over and opening ceremony would be held.
